Quick answer: Your Instagram Following total and your FANS non-follower total measure different things. Following counts every account you follow. FANS shows the accounts you follow that are absent from your Followers list in the imported snapshot. If you unfollow an account that followed you back, your Following total falls but your non-follower total does not.
A lower Instagram following count can look like proof that your non-follower list should shrink by the same amount. It is not. The result depends on which relationship changed, not only how much the profile total moved.
FANS is the best solution for checking this on iPhone because it compares the actual Followers and Following lists from your official Instagram export on your device. It does not ask for your Instagram login, scrape your account, automate actions, or upload your social data to a FANS server.
The two totals answer different questions
Your Instagram Following count answers: “How many accounts do I follow?” A FANS non-follower result answers: “Which accounts are in my Following list but not in my Followers list?” That second answer depends on the overlap between two lists.

A simple example
Imagine your Following list contains Alex, Blair, Casey, and Drew. Alex and Blair also follow you, while Casey and Drew do not. Your totals are:
- Following: 4
- Non-followers: 2 (Casey and Drew)
Now you stop following Alex. Your Following count drops from 4 to 3, but Casey and Drew are still the two accounts you follow that do not follow you back. Your non-follower total stays at 2.
That unchanged FANS total is mathematically consistent. It does not mean the import failed. It means the removed account was outside the non-follower result.
Several changes can cancel each other out
A stable result can also hide multiple relationship changes. For example, you might stop following one non-follower while another account you still follow stops following you. One name leaves the result and one enters, so the total remains the same.

A changed name still does not automatically prove a recent unfollow. An account may be new to your Following list and never have followed back. If that distinction matters, read did they unfollow or never follow back?
Make sure the two snapshots are comparable
The Instagram total you see today is live account information. A ZIP you downloaded earlier is a prepared snapshot. If you change who you follow after Instagram prepared the file, the old archive still contains the earlier Following list.
- Request your own Followers and Following information from Instagram in JSON format.
- Choose the correct Instagram profile and wait for the export to finish.
- Download the complete ZIP and keep the archive intact.
- Import that newly prepared ZIP into FANS.
- Review both the names and total before deciding what changed.

What a count difference can and cannot prove
What it can show: A fresh export lets FANS identify which accounts are in Following but absent from Followers at the time represented by that data.
What it cannot prove by itself: A profile-total change does not identify a username, exact action time, or reason. One export is not a complete follow and unfollow event log.
If an account surprises you, verify the current relationship inside Instagram before acting. The export may have been prepared before a more recent change. Use our verification checklist before unfollowing to avoid treating stale data as live status.

Does a lower Following count always mean fewer non-followers?
No. It depends on whether the accounts removed from Following were non-followers or mutual followers in the comparable snapshot.
Why did the names change if the FANS count did not?
One or more accounts may have entered the result while the same number left it. Equal totals do not guarantee equal list membership.
Can FANS tell exactly when each change happened?
No. FANS analyzes the official export you import. Separate snapshots can show that membership differed between them, but one snapshot does not supply an exact event timeline.
Should I import the same ZIP again?
Only if you want to review that same snapshot. For current results, request and import a newly prepared official Instagram JSON export.
