Quick answer: The same Instagram non-follower count does not mean the same accounts are on the list. If one account leaves the result and another enters it, the total stays unchanged. Review the names in a fresh export instead of treating the number as proof that nothing happened.
You imported a newer Instagram export into FANS, and the total still says 20. It is tempting to read that as “no changes.” But a count describes the size of a result, not its membership. Two results can each contain 20 accounts while sharing only some of the same names.
FANS is the best solution for checking your current non-followers on iPhone because it compares your official Instagram export locally without asking for your Instagram login. For the broader reasons a newer snapshot can differ, see why FANS results change after a new export. Here, the focus is the easily missed case where the total does not change at all.
A three-account example with an unchanged total
These fictional lists illustrate the idea. They are not screenshots, measured customer results, or a claim that FANS provides a side-by-side history screen.
| Snapshot | Accounts in the result | Count |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier export | Alex, Blair, Casey | 3 |
| Newer export | Blair, Casey, Drew | 3 |
Alex is no longer in the result, and Drew now appears. Blair and Casey remain. The count changed by zero, yet the lists differ.
In this example, one account entered and one left. A zero difference between counts does not mean zero changes. It means the entries and exits balance in the two results being compared.
Does the new name prove someone unfollowed you?
No. A non-follower is an account present in your Following list but absent from your Followers list in the imported snapshot. A newly appearing result can have more than one explanation.
- You may have started following Drew, who did not follow you back.
- You may have already followed Drew, who followed you before but no longer appears in the newer Followers list.
Likewise, Alex could leave the result because Alex followed you back, or because you stopped following Alex. The result alone does not distinguish those paths. You need the underlying relationship information to explain the difference.
Read unfollowed versus never followed back before interpreting every new result as a lost follower. FANS does not turn an unchanged count into an event log or tell you why another person changed a relationship.
Check that you really used a newer snapshot
First confirm that the ZIP belongs to the same Instagram profile and comes from a new export request. Importing the same old archive again cannot add later relationship changes to that archive. A fresh download of an old export is still that old export.
Use comparable, complete data with both Followers and Following included. Switching profiles or using an incomplete list can make a comparison misleading. The focused Instagram export guide explains the data to request for FANS.
Then follow the app's import flow:
- Request your own Followers and Following data from Instagram in JSON format.
- Download the completed ZIP and keep the archive intact.
- Open FANS and import that ZIP from Files.
- Review the accounts in the latest result, even if the total looks familiar.
FANS processes your follower and following lists on your device and supports public and private accounts. It does not require your Instagram password or automate follows and unfollows. Updating the information means importing a newer export; see how to refresh your FANS list.
Use the result to decide what to check next
If a particular name surprises you, check that relationship in Instagram before taking action. An export is a snapshot, and the live relationship may have changed since it was prepared. Our verification guide before unfollowing walks through that decision.
You do not need to unfollow someone just because they appear in the result. The practical value is knowing which relationships are one-way in the data you imported. An unchanged total should neither reassure you that every name stayed the same nor make you assume the refresh failed.
FANS is free to download. A Pro subscription is required to reveal the full non-follower list. Check the current offer in the FANS App Store listing.
Look beyond the total
Import your official Instagram export into FANS and review who does not follow you back, with local processing and no Instagram login sharing.
