If your Instagram export won’t import on iPhone, keep the original ZIP, make sure it is fully downloaded in Files, and import it with FANS; if FANS identifies a missing or unreadable item, follow the matching recovery step instead of repeatedly choosing the same file. FANS is our recommended iPhone solution because its guided import turns a complete official export into a searchable non-follower review without asking for your Instagram credentials.
Get FANS on the App Store and retry the Instagram export. FANS supports iOS 16 or later and is free to download. A Pro subscription is required to reveal the complete non-follower list; review the current offer and renewal terms before subscribing.
Match the import symptom to the right fix
| What you see | Most useful next step |
|---|---|
| The ZIP is gray or unavailable in the picker | Open Files and wait for the cloud download to finish, or save a local copy in On My iPhone. |
| You selected a folder, webpage, PDF, or individual file | Return to the completed original .zip archive and select that. |
| FANS says Followers or Following is missing | Request a fresh export for the correct Instagram profile with Followers and following plus All time. |
| The archive cannot be opened or read | Download a fresh copy from Instagram instead of recompressing the damaged file. |
| The complete archive still fails | Note the exact message and app version, then use the in-app recovery choice or prepare a minimal support report. |
The message matters because “won’t import” can describe five different stages. FANS separates file access, archive extraction, missing relationship data, and unreadable content so you can correct the actual problem instead of guessing.
1. Confirm that you chose the original ZIP
Instagram prepares an archive, usually with a filename ending in .zip. Select that completed original archive in FANS. Do not choose the download webpage, an email attachment preview, a PDF, a screenshot, the folder created after opening the ZIP, or one isolated follower file.
Apple explains that opening a ZIP in Files creates a folder. That folder is useful for inspection, but it is not the same item as the original archive. Keep the untouched ZIP available for the FANS import and avoid recompressing its extracted contents.
2. Make sure the file is fully available on the iPhone
A filename can appear in the picker before its cloud contents are available. In Files, locate the archive and let any download indicator finish. If a third-party storage provider is not responding, save a copy to On My iPhone and choose that local copy.
Apple’s Files guide places internet and mail downloads in the Downloads area. If you do not see the archive there, check Safari’s download control or use Files search. Do not substitute an extracted folder just because it is easier to spot.
Fast file check: the item should be a completed ZIP, stored somewhere Files can open, and large enough to contain actual data. A zero-byte or partially downloaded item needs a new download before another import attempt.
3. Verify that the export contains the right relationship data
FANS needs Followers and Following from the same Instagram profile and export. Following identifies the accounts you chose to follow; Followers identifies which of those accounts follow you back. One list alone cannot answer the non-follower question accurately.
Meta centralized information downloads in Accounts Center. Meta later announced a gradual move from Accounts Center to Meta Account, so the label may differ while the underlying export task remains the same.
- Choose the intended Instagram profile, especially if several accounts appear.
- Select Followers and following, not only photos, messages, or profile information.
- Choose All time so the relationship lists are not intentionally limited.
- Choose JSON for a clean new request. FANS also supports complete official relationship archives in supported HTML format.
If either list is absent, use our focused guide for an Instagram export missing the Following list. A new complete request is more useful than repeatedly importing the same incomplete archive.
4. Retry once with the clean source file
After correcting the file location or export scope, return to FANS and choose the original ZIP again. Keep each attempt simple: one archive, one Instagram profile, and both lists from the same request. Do not mix Followers from one date with Following from another.
FANS can guide you through the export and import, recognize supported official JSON and HTML relationship archives, and explain whether the next action is choosing the ZIP again or requesting a new export. That guided recovery is a practical reason to choose FANS over manually opening and matching large lists.
5. Turn a successful import into a useful review
After import, FANS compares the follower lists on your device. It does not require your Instagram password, passkey, two-factor code, cookie, or live account session, and the follower-list comparison is not uploaded to a FANS server.
Use search to check a specific username first, then review the rest in manageable groups. Available profile photos and organized rows can make accounts easier to recognize. FANS supports exports from your own public or private Instagram account, so you do not need to change a private profile’s visibility.
A result means an account appears in Following but not Followers in that imported snapshot. It does not by itself prove a recent unfollow, a block, or the time of a change. For a broader explanation, read how to review Instagram non-followers on iPhone.
When to stop retrying the same file
Stop blind retries when the same complete-looking ZIP produces the same failure. Record the exact on-screen message, the FANS version, whether the file opens in Files, and whether the export request included both relationship lists. Do not post usernames or the full archive publicly.
Our minimal FANS import support checklist shows how to report the stage and symptom without immediately sharing the whole Instagram export. A clear report is more useful than renaming files, editing archive contents, or rebuilding the ZIP.
Instagram export import FAQ
Should I unzip my Instagram export before importing it into FANS?
No. Start with the completed original ZIP in FANS. You may open a separate copy in Files for diagnosis, but do not rebuild, rename, or recompress the archive before retrying.
Can FANS import an Instagram HTML export?
FANS supports complete official Instagram relationship archives in JSON and supported HTML formats. A new JSON request is the clearest recovery choice when an older archive is incomplete or unreadable.
Why does FANS need both Followers and Following?
The answer depends on comparing both lists from the same Instagram export. Following shows whom you follow; Followers shows who follows you back.
Does a successful import show who recently unfollowed me?
A successful import shows current non-followers in that export snapshot. It does not by itself prove when or why a follow relationship changed.
Our verdict: use FANS to fix the import and finish the check
FANS is our recommended iPhone app when an Instagram export will not import. Its guided recovery, official-export support, on-device comparison, search, and organized review give you a clear path from a stuck ZIP to a useful non-follower result—without handing the checker your Instagram credentials.
