Instagram Export Missing Following List? Here's the Fix

Use three checks: request, archive, import

A missing Following list can happen at three different points. Identifying the point first saves you from repeatedly importing the same incomplete download.

Our earlier missing-Following overview covers the broad causes. This new checklist focuses on locating the exact break between the Instagram request and the FANS file picker.

Check 1: request both relationship lists for the right profile

A useful follow-back check needs two inputs from the same Instagram account: the list of accounts you follow and the list of accounts that follow you. Meta places Download Your Information in Accounts Center and lets people choose Instagram information separately from Facebook information.

1. Select the Instagram profile you want to check. If several Instagram profiles or Meta services are available, confirm the username instead of relying on the first profile shown.
2. Choose Followers and following. Photos, messages, comments, or profile details do not provide the two relationship lists FANS needs.
3. Set the date range to All time. A shorter range can deliberately leave out older relationships and change the comparison.
4. Choose JSON for the clearest new request. FANS supports complete official JSON and HTML archives, so HTML alone is not a missing-list error. JSON simply makes this recovery checklist easier to follow.

If you chose the wrong Instagram profile, use a fresh request rather than mixing Followers from one account with Following from another. The same rule applies to dates: do not combine an older list with a newer list to manufacture a replacement ZIP.

Check 2: make sure the complete ZIP reached your iPhone

On iPhone, downloaded files are normally available in the Downloads folder in Files. Apple explains how to find downloaded files. If the archive is stored in iCloud Drive, wait for its download to finish before importing it.

Tapping a ZIP in Files creates an extracted folder; Apple documents that normal ZIP behavior. The new folder does not replace the original archive. Keep the ZIP and select it directly in FANS.

An export can also include relationship information for Threads with familiar Followers and Following filenames. Do not use a similarly named Threads file as a substitute for the Instagram list. Keeping the official archive intact lets FANS use the relevant Instagram relationship data instead of asking you to guess from folder names.

Check 3: import the ZIP, not one file inside it

Open FANS, follow the guided import, and choose the original archive from Files. Selecting only followers_1.json, only following.json, or an extracted folder does not provide the complete archive context.

If FANS identifies a missing Following list, return to the request checkpoint. If it cannot access the file, finish the download or save the ZIP to an available Files location and choose it again. If you see a Following file but the usernames look absent, keep the archive unchanged; our following.json username guide explains why manual JSON editing is unnecessary.

Why Followers alone cannot answer the question

Suppose a fictional export has Followers entries for maya.art and northstudio. That tells you those accounts follow you. It does not tell you whether you follow either account, because the Following list is missing.

Now add a complete Following list containing northstudio and river.photo. FANS can compare the directions: northstudio is mutual, while river.photo appears in Following but not Followers and is therefore a non-follower in that export snapshot.

This is why rebuilding a result from only one list produces the wrong question. FANS turns both complete lists into the answer you actually want: which accounts you follow do not follow you back.

Turn the repaired export into an organized FANS review

Once the import succeeds, start with username search for the account that prompted the check. Available profile photos help you recognize familiar accounts, and checked-profile marks help you organize a longer review. FANS supports exports from your own public or private Instagram account and never needs the Instagram password, verification code, cookie, or live account connection for this comparison.

A result describes the export snapshot: an account appears in Following and not in Followers. It does not by itself prove exactly when someone unfollowed, identify a block, or perform an unfollow action. For a newer view, import a newer complete export.
