Quick answer: A PDF, screenshot, or saved webpage of Instagram's download screen is not your Instagram data export. FANS needs the completed official JSON export ZIP containing Followers and Following. If your saved file shows a download button, sign-in screen, or export-ready message, return to Instagram's export area and download the archive itself. Renaming that page to .zip will not turn it into an export.
This is a different problem from choosing HTML when requesting your data. An official HTML export can contain account records inside an archive; a saved download page may contain only the interface used to retrieve them. If you intentionally selected HTML in the export settings, use our JSON versus HTML export guide. If you saved what was on your screen, start here.
Identify what you actually saved
Find the file in Files and check its name, type, and preview where available. The filename is a clue, not proof: a file called “Instagram export” could still be a PDF. File size alone cannot establish whether the right records are present.
| What you find | What it tells you | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| A PDF or image showing “download your information” | You have a visual copy of a screen, not the structured export. | Return to the export request and download its completed archive. |
| A webpage copy showing sign-in, an error, or a download button | The saved content is a page used along the download path. | Open Instagram directly and check the request there; do not keep importing the page. |
| A ZIP containing readable HTML account records | You may have the official HTML-format export. | Request Followers and Following in JSON for the FANS workflow. |
| A ZIP containing follower and following JSON records | You have the expected kind of source material. | Import the intact original ZIP; investigate completeness if it still fails. |
On iPhone, saving a webpage as a PDF is a normal Safari feature, as Apple's webpage-to-PDF guide explains. That feature preserves the page you are viewing. It does not fetch every file linked from the page. “Saved to Files” therefore confirms a save location, not that you downloaded the Instagram archive.
Recover the actual Instagram export
- Open Instagram directly. Go to its official information-export area and find the request for the correct Instagram profile. Use the in-app export instructions in FANS if you need help locating the current controls.
- Check the requested data. For FANS, use Followers and Following, JSON format, and the full available date range. If the request used HTML or omitted a required list, prepare a new export with the appropriate settings.
- Use the completed request's download control. Saving, printing, or taking a screenshot of the request page does not replace this step. If Instagram requires you to sign in, complete that only within Instagram's own service; FANS does not need your Instagram credentials.
- Wait for the file download to finish. Locate the resulting ZIP in Files. Apple's guide to finding iPhone downloads describes using Safari's Downloads control and the Files app. Your download location can vary with your settings.
- Import the original archive into FANS. Follow the FANS import walkthrough and select the completed ZIP, rather than the earlier PDF or webpage copy.
If the completed export is no longer available from Instagram, request a new one. A saved copy of the download page cannot recreate the archive. Keep the original ZIP intact rather than extracting files, editing them, and building a replacement archive for import.
A fictional example: two files, one useful input
Sam sees an export-ready page in Safari, saves it as Instagram information.pdf, and tries to select it in FANS. The PDF shows the right account name and a download button, but it contains no usable follower-list JSON. Buying access or changing the filename cannot add those missing records.
Sam returns to Instagram, uses the actual download control, and receives a completed ZIP. That archive is the file to select in FANS. The PDF can remain a personal reference, but it is not a substitute for the ZIP. This example illustrates the distinction; it does not describe a test of a particular Instagram screen.
Why conversion and renaming do not fix this
Changing page.pdf to page.zip changes the label, not the underlying file format. Compressing a saved page creates an archive of that page; it does not create the missing Followers and Following records. Likewise, extracting visible text from a screenshot cannot recover account records that were never displayed.
There is no need to upload a private archive or account screenshot to a file-conversion service for this problem. The useful fix is obtaining the correct official export. FANS compares follower and following lists on your device without asking for your Instagram login.
If you now have a real ZIP but import still fails
Move to the next diagnosis once you have established that the file is an archive. A ZIP that opens successfully can still have the wrong export format, missing records, or other content problems. Our ZIP opens but FANS import fails guide separates archive readability from usable list data.
For a persistent failure, note the exact stage, file type, and error text before contacting support. The support-report checklist helps you provide useful details without sharing your complete social graph by default.
What FANS can tell you: With a valid export, FANS identifies accounts you follow that are absent from your exported followers list. The result reflects that snapshot; it does not prove an exact unfollow time or identify who blocked you. FANS is free to download, and a Pro subscription is required to reveal the complete non-follower list. Pro access does not convert an unsupported file into valid input.
FANS does not automate unfollowing and is not affiliated with Instagram or Meta.
