Quick answer: An Instagram ZIP that opens in Files is not automatically ready for FANS. Opening the archive and importing its follower records are different checks. The ZIP can open normally while containing HTML, the wrong account's data, missing relationship files, or a structure the app cannot read. Keep the original ZIP and diagnose the contents before downloading the same file repeatedly.

Three checks that answer different questions

For example, a ZIP full of photos may extract perfectly and still provide nothing to compare. Likewise, the fictional text {"note":"hello"} is valid JSON, but it is not a follower list. JSON's format specification describes the syntax; it does not certify the meaning or completeness of an Instagram export.
First, return to the original ZIP
After opening an archive, it is easy to select the newly extracted folder instead of the original file. FANS's normal workflow uses the original Instagram JSON ZIP. Return to that ZIP in the import picker; do not select a photo, an HTML page, or an individual JSON file from the extracted folder.
Apple's ZIP instructions explain that tapping a ZIP in Files creates a folder containing its files. Seeing that folder is expected. Extraction is optional for the diagnostic checks below, not a required preparation step for FANS.
Keep the original archive untouched. If you inspect an extracted copy, leave its contents separate and do not compress them again for import. Rebuilding the ZIP can change its folder layout and introduce another variable while you are trying to identify the original problem.
Check format and scope, not just the filename
- Confirm the request was for JSON. Both HTML and JSON exports can arrive inside a ZIP. The outer
.zipextension does not identify the format of the relationship records inside. If you requested HTML, obtain a JSON export; renaming an HTML file does not convert its contents. - Look for both relationship lists. Do not assume the presence of any JSON file is enough.
- Check the account and export selection. Confirm which Instagram profile the request covers and whether you selected Followers and Following. An unrelated account's complete export is still the wrong input for your question.
- Keep files from one request together. If the export arrived in multiple ZIPs, identify the relevant part or request a focused export. Do not combine a follower file from one date with a following file from another.
You do not need to paste private records into an online JSON validator. Recognizing the requested format and the presence of the relevant files is often enough to choose a next step. If the structure is unclear, record the filenames for support instead of editing keys, brackets, or usernames.

A readable, appropriate-looking archive does not rule out an app bug or an unsupported export variation. Repeating the same import indefinitely adds little evidence. A successful import is still a snapshot
After the import succeeds, FANS compares the follower and following lists locally on your device without asking for your Instagram login. Its non-follower result identifies accounts you follow that are absent from the supplied follower list. It is not proof of an unfollow event, a block, or an exact change time.
If import succeeds but the result seems old, that is a separate freshness question. Downloading an already-prepared archive again does not update its records. Use a newer official export when you need a newer snapshot, and check an unexpected relationship in Instagram before acting on it.
