If your Instagram data export is missing followers, check that it includes both Followers and Following for the right Instagram account, request a fresh All time export if either list is absent, then import the original ZIP into FANS for an on-device non-follower check without giving the checker your Instagram login. FANS is our recommended iPhone solution for turning a complete official export into a useful list of who does not follow you back.
Get FANS to import your Instagram export and check follow-backs. FANS supports iOS 16 or later and includes guided import and video help. It is free to download; revealing the complete non-follower list requires a Pro subscription. Check the current offer and renewal terms before subscribing.
Start with the symptom, not another download
“Missing followers” can describe several different problems. You may be looking at an extracted folder instead of the downloaded archive, have selected the wrong profile, or have a request that did not include both relationship lists. Use the check that matches what you actually see.
| What you see | What to do next |
|---|---|
| You see a folder, but cannot find the ZIP you downloaded | Look in Files → Downloads for the original archive. Select that ZIP in FANS rather than an individual file inside the folder. |
| The export contains Following but no Followers list | Check that you requested Followers and following for the correct Instagram profile. If the list is absent, request a new export with both lists and All time. |
| You see numbered follower files | Keep the original archive together. A file such as followers_1.json is a follower-list file; a numbered name alone does not mean the download failed. |
| The archive belongs to Facebook or another Instagram profile | Request the Instagram relationship export for the account you want to check. Do not combine files from different profiles. |
| The file will not finish downloading or open | Finish the download in Files or download the archive again. If it remains unavailable, resolve that file problem before trying another import. |
Our earlier guide to missing follower data introduces the export-to-FANS workflow. This checklist separates a file-location problem from genuinely absent data, so you can choose the right recovery step.
Check the original ZIP before rebuilding your request
Open the iPhone Files app and look in Downloads; depending on your download location, that may be under iCloud Drive. Apple explains where iPhone downloads are saved. Find the actual archive Instagram supplied, rather than a screenshot, PDF, or saved download webpage.
If you tapped a ZIP and a folder appeared, that can simply be normal extraction. Apple's ZIP guide describes this behavior. Keep the original ZIP for FANS. You do not need to copy usernames out of that folder, rename the relationship files, or create a replacement archive.
FANS supports official Instagram export archives in JSON and HTML. Having HTML does not by itself mean your followers are missing. For a fresh request, choose JSON to follow the straightforward checklist below. If your existing complete archive is HTML, try importing the original ZIP instead of requesting the same information again just to change its format.
If Followers is absent, request a complete export
A checker needs two lists from the same account: who you follow and who follows you. FANS does the comparison on your iPhone, but an absent follower list cannot be reconstructed from Following alone. Start a new official request when either relationship list is missing.
- Open the information-export controls for your Instagram account. Follow the guide in FANS or find the download/export option in Instagram's settings and Accounts Center. Meta places its information-download controls in Accounts Center; labels may differ in your account.
- Select the exact Instagram profile you want to check. When several profiles or services appear, confirm the Instagram username. A Facebook-only export is a different file; our Instagram versus Facebook export guide explains that mix-up.
- Include Followers and following. If choosing specific information, select the relationship category containing both lists. Photos, messages, or account details alone will not supply the comparison.
- Choose All time and JSON, and download to your device. All time avoids deliberately narrowing the requested relationship information to a recent window. Do not combine an older Followers file with a newer Following file.
- Wait for Instagram to prepare the export, then download it fully. Save the original ZIP in Files. Check that you selected this new download when returning to FANS, especially if an older archive has a similar name.
Before importing, use one short checkpoint: right Instagram account, both relationship lists, All time, original downloaded ZIP. This is more useful than repeatedly submitting the same incomplete file.
Why missing data can change a follow-back answer
Consider a fictional example. Your Following list contains river_studio, and that account also appears in your complete Followers list. The relationship is mutual in that export. If you compare against an incomplete follower list that omits river_studio, the missing entry could make the account look like a non-follower.
That is why the fix is to recover complete inputs before interpreting the results. A limited date range is a reason to check the request, not evidence that particular people unfollowed you. A complete import gives FANS the relationship information it needs for the intended comparison.
Import into FANS and finish the check
Open FANS, follow its import guide, and choose the original ZIP from Files. For a file stored in iCloud, make sure its download has completed. If FANS reports a missing list, return to the account-and-category checklist above; if the alert concerns opening the file, check the download and select the ZIP again.
Once your report is ready, use username search to check the account that brought you here. Available profile photos help you recognize familiar people, and checked-profile marks help organize a longer review. FANS works with exports from your own public or private Instagram account, so you can keep your profile private while checking follow-backs.
A non-follower result means an account is in your exported Following list and absent from your exported Followers list. It does not, by itself, prove a historical unfollow, identify a block, or describe a change after the export was prepared. Import a newer complete export when you want a newer snapshot. Our no-login follow-back walkthrough explains the full review process.
FANS compares follower lists on-device without an Instagram login to the checker. The App Store listing separately discloses purchases, identifiers, and usage data, including purchases and identifiers used for tracking.
Our verdict: fix the export, then use FANS
Choose FANS when you want a clear Instagram non-follower check on iPhone without handing a checker your Instagram credentials. Recover both relationship lists, keep the official ZIP intact, and let FANS turn the complete export into searchable results you can review.
