Equal Instagram Followers and Following? You Can Still Have Non-Followers

If your profile says 500 followers and 500 following, subtracting the numbers gives zero. That zero is the difference between two totals, not the number of non-followers. To answer the follow-back question, you need to know which names overlap.

FANS is the best solution for this check on iPhone because it compares your official export on-device without asking for your Instagram login. If you are new to the terminology, start with what a non-follower means.

A small example: four followers, four following

Imagine these two lists in the same complete export. The names below are fictional, and the example illustrates the comparison rather than an actual FANS account.

You follow four accounts: Alex, Blair, Casey, and Drew. Four accounts follow you: Alex, Blair, Ellis, and Frankie. Your counts match, but Casey and Drew are still non-followers because they appear only in Following.

Ellis and Frankie balance the totals without following Casey or Drew on your behalf. Their presence in your Followers list cannot tell you whether anyone else follows back.

What a 1:1 ratio actually tells you

A 1:1 follower-to-following ratio tells you that the list sizes match. It does not measure the overlap. In a complete snapshot with four accounts on each side, there could be zero, one, two, three, or four accounts you follow that do not follow you back.

The useful calculation is non-followers = accounts in Following that are absent from Followers. If you know the number of accounts present in both lists, you can also subtract that overlap from the Following total. The two profile totals alone do not give you that overlap.

Can I have more followers and still have non-followers?

Yes. Even if 1,000 accounts follow you and you follow only 100, some of those 100 might not follow you back. Having a larger audience does not establish a relationship with a particular account.

This is also why the FANS result can be smaller than your Following count: accounts that follow you back are excluded from the non-follower result.

How to check the actual lists with FANS

1. Request your own Instagram data through the official export flow, selecting the correct profile and Followers and Following in JSON format.
2. Download the completed ZIP and keep it intact.
3. Open FANS and choose that ZIP from Files.
4. Review the accounts present in Following but absent from Followers.

Your follower and following data is processed locally on your device. FANS does not require your Instagram password, scrape your account, or automate follows and unfollows.

What if the names still look wrong?

Matching totals are not a reason to reject a non-follower result. Check the underlying data instead: did you export the correct profile, include both lists, and import the completed archive?

Also consider timing. An export is a snapshot; a relationship that changed afterward may look different inside Instagram. Import a fresh export when you want newer information, and verify a specific relationship before deciding to unfollow.

One snapshot does not establish whether someone unfollowed you or never followed you in the first place. Read unfollowed versus never followed back if that distinction matters to you.
